HOW WE WORK

Design for Humanity works according to a year cycle with a different topic every year. The year consists of five phases in which we bring together experts and young talent to take a fresh look at an existing problem. With design thinking methods, we aim to find creative, sustainable and innovative solutions for social wicked problems.

PHASE 1 | PROBLEM FINDING

Design for Humanity chooses a different theme each year. In spring, we choose the social issue we want to work on, and we seek partners to further shape this. The partners can be governments, NGO’s or companies, looking for solutions for their specific social issue.

For the year 2017/2018 we have chosen democracy as our new theme! We kicked off Designing Democracy in Pakhuis de Zwijger and work towards our ideation event at the Dutch Design Week now. More info.

PHASE 2 | DESIGN RESEARCH & IDEATION

We further explore the theme with design research and formulate ‘challenges’ that will help designers to get started.

During the Dutch Design Week in October, our central event takes place: a huge brainstorming session with about 80 student designers who contribute with their creative minds to society. An inspiring day full of energy and positivity! More info.

The day leads to a huge amount of solutions for new or improved products, services or methods. These are critically reviewed afterwards. What are the best ideas? How can we really bring them to life and make social impact? During a workshop, the ideas are clustered, combined and further elaborated. The first project plans are formed in collaboration with our partners on the theme.

PHASE 3 | CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

To achieve maximum results, we connect a graduate student to a project. Design for Humanity ensures good guidance and makes sure we don’t stop in the ideating phase. We are really going to do something! Through a social design process ranging from February to June, the idea will be developed into a fully thought-out concept or even prototype. Again: together with partners, experts and last but not least: the users.

PHASE 4 | PROTOTYPING & TESTING

Depending on the project, we continue prototyping and testing and make sure all results are delivered properly to the partner, with the aim to truly implement and realize social innovation.

PHASE 5 | IMPLEMENTATION & EXPO

The result of the whole process will be exhibited a year later during the next Dutch Design Week. Together we show that we have really created value!
